Royal order of Denmark award for ICMM's immediate past president Morten Hahn-Pedersen, immediate past president of ICMM, has been appointed a Knight of the Order of Dannenbrog, by Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark. This follows on the celebration in February 2013 of Morten's 25 years as director of the Fisheries and Maritime Museum of Esbjerg, Denmark. ICMM Executive Council meeting in Greenwich, UK 22/23 February 2013 Day 1 of the ICMM EC meeting ended with a late afternoon conducted tour of restored tea clipper Cutty Sark at Greenwich. The controversial method of supporting the ship off the bottom of the dock has certainly created a remarkable space, dominated by the hull of the ship. Tips for recruiting young volunteers Having friends that volunteer regularly is the primary factor influencing the volunteering habits of young people. HMS Bounty (replica) Update 30 October 2012: HMS Bounty (replica) has sunk in the wild weather whipped up by hurricane Sandy. Of the sixteen crew on board, 14 were winched to safety by rescue helicopters, another was rescued but has died, and the captain is still missing. The crew member who died, Claudene Christian is reported to be a distant relative of Fletcher Christian who led the mutiny on the 'real' Bounty against Captain Bligh. For more details click here. HMS Bounty (replica) abandoned off US coast 29 October 2012: The 'Marlon Brando' film replica of HMS Bounty has been abandoned due to high seas and strong winds in the wake of hurricane Sandy, off the North Carolina coast of the USA. The Tall Ships are coming . . . to Australia Europe sees them annually, but the last time a significant gathering of the world’s Tall Ships took place in Australia was to commemorate the nation’s bicentennial in 1988. Click here for more information. The Mariners’ Museum, Newport News, Virginia, USA has opened Abandon Ship: Stories of Survival. This major exhibition explores the aftermath of marine catastrophes through the perspective of those who have been cast adrift on the sea. “It is not about shipwrecks, but about the experiences people have after they are taken to lifeboats or life rafts,” said Lyles Forbes, curator for Abandon Ship. Peking's situation desperate Peking, a steel-hulled four-masted barque built in 1911, which has been a largely neglected fixture at New York’s South Street Seaport for almost the last 40 years, is now in desperate need of a new home. The South Street Seaport Museum thought that they had an agreement with the city of Hamburg to take the grand old ship. That deal apparently fell through and the future of the old ship is again in doubt. A weekend of beautiful boats and entertainment. The weekend also sees the first public guided tours of the new Wharf 7 Heritage Centre exhibition, a collaborative project between the ANMM and Sydney Heritage Fleet. 2 October 2012 Rachel Mulhearn, Director of Liverpool Maritime Museum, and a member of ICMM's Executive Council retired on 30 September.
