ICMM North European Network on Exhibitions Workshop

In early 2012, ICMM’s Executive Council established a working group for the purpose of establishing the framework for an ICMM North European network on exhibitions.

The inaugural Network Workshop takes place on 7-8 March, 2013 in Sweden

The inauguration of the network and the first two-day workshop takes place in Göteborg, Sweden, hosted by the newly renovated Sjöfartsmuseet Akvariet.

Full details of the programme are set out on the flyer below.

Registrations for the conference closed on 20 February with more than 45 delegates set to take part.

“In order for the workshops to be successful, we would like everyone to take an active part. We will ask all the participants to bring a case study of their own, an idea that they would like to develop or ideas and reflections they would like to share and discuss. The chair of each session will set the workshop off by presenting a set of questions and/or a case study. This is a great opportunity to learn from each other more in depth.” – says the organising committee.

The programme will also offer participants a closer look at the work carried out at the Sjöfartsmuseet Akvariet, including a presentation of the strategies behind the development of a new top floor by director Anna Rosengren, as well as a walk & talk tour through the exhibitions, led by head of exhibitions, Emma Having. But most importantly there will be a lot of room for discussion and sharing of ideas around exhibition practices and the function of the new new network.

A report on the conference will be prepared for the website.

    Watch for its announcement.

    Background to the Network

A large number of ICMM’s member museums have opened or are about to open new exhibitions. Thus there are many museums that have current experience with exhibitions and it is natural to use this expertise to give staff working with exhibition at all levels a chance to exchange experiences and inspire one another. It was this that led to the workshop concept and the decision to follow it with further network meetings on maritime exhibitions.

The significance of this new partnership is that it -

    • is Northern European – This is for practical reasons; it reduces transportation time and cost for participants, but others are, of course, welcome to join the network.

    • involves only maritime museums

    • has current experience in exhibitions, both in content and technically

    • involves several employee groups

    • builds professional networks

    • has the ability to organise workshops

    • is based on participants’ direct involvement

    • is an ICMM initiative

    • can be used as a platform for recruiting new members for ICMM

The network will be maintained by meetings at the participating museums. Each participating museum is required to host a day event for members of the network, either after opening a new exhibition or during planning and building it. The purpose is to give participants a qualified opportunity to meet frequently and get updated on the latest developments. This model will keep it affordable for both participants and organisers, even with limited travel and conference budgets.
