The 2011 Congress of the ICMM will be held October 9-15 in Washington, DC, and Newport News, Virginia, USA.
The Congress theme—Maritime Museums 2011: Connecting with the future—will explore the creative ways maritime museums are moving forward in the context of challenging times. Whether forming new partnerships for enhanced programming, utilizing new (and old) technologies for reaching and engaging visitors, or assessing our impact on our communities, the 2011 Congress will provide an exciting opportunity for delegates to discuss these and other important issues of concern to all.

The Congress will open in Washington, DC, at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History (above), located among a wealth of museums, galleries, and monuments on the National Mall. The NMAH collects and preserves more than 3 million artifacts, including significant collections and archives reflecting the nation’s rich maritime history. As the leading history museum in the United States, the NMAH welcomes nearly 5 million visitors annually and maintains an active schedule of exhibitions, programs, and outreach activities.

After two days of sessions and events, we’ll travel by motor coach to Newport News, Virginia, home of the Mariners’ Museum (above). Designated by the U.S. Congress as "America's National Maritime Museum," the Mariners' has the largest maritime international collections in North America and is home to The USS MONITOR Center and the story of the first battle of ironclads. In addition to a state-of-the-art conservation facility, The Mariners' also features the renowned International Small Craft Center with its impressive array of watercraft from around the world.
Congress program details are under development by the Program Committee and will be available in the coming months. The ICMM Web site will be updated as details are confirmed.
