HMS Belfast is a cruiser. She was launched in March 1938 and served
throughout the Second World War, playing a leading part in the destruction
of the German battle cruiser Scharnhorst at the Battle of North
Cape and in the Normandy Landings.
After the war, she supported United Nations forces in Korea and
remained in service with the Royal Navy until 1965. In 1971 she
was saved for the nation as a unique and historic reminder of Britains
naval heritage in the first half of the twentieth century.
Exhibits & Programs:
Tour the HMS Belfast
A tour round this huge and complex warship will take you from her
Quarterdeck up to the top of her Bridge and all the way down through
nine decks to her massive Boiler and Engine rooms.
On the way you will see her triple 6-inch gun Turrets, the heavily
armoured Shell Rooms and Magazines and experience what life was
like for her crew by visiting the cramped Messdecks, Officers' Cabins,
Galley and Sick Bay.
Coming Soon! - a new permanent exhibition: Life at Sea
HMS Belfast is pleased to announce the opening of a new permanent
exhibition on 31st October 2002. The exhibition, working title Life
at Sea, is designed to complement HMS Belfast in War and Peace,
the existing historical exhibition. Whilst the latter tells the
story of the ship, the new exhibition will concentrate on the lives
and experiences of the ship's companies during her various commissions,
and so as much use as possible will be made of eyewitness accounts,
particularly sound recordings.
The exhibition is being designed to be particularly relevant and
accessible to schools and will be used by the ship's Education Staff
for class teaching. A key feature will be a range of interactive
displays for the general visitor and to assist Education Staff.
You can have a children's birthday party on board HMS Belfast.
Corporate Hospitality: The Admiral's Quarters, Wardroom and Anteroom,
the Ship's Company Dining Hall and the Gunroom banqueting suites
can be hired for receptions, lunches, dinners and conferences, and
a full catering service is available.
