The mission of Mystic Seaport is to create a broad, public understanding
of the relationship of America and the sea.
In order to accomplish this we:
Document, preserve, and stimulate scholarship in American maritime
history and convey to a wide and diverse public the stories of America
and the Sea through the Museum's collections, exhibitions, education
programs, library, communications, products and publications.
Collect and preserve representative examples of American maritime
material culture emphasizing art, commerce, technology and science.
Collect and preserve examples of significant commercial and recreational
watercraft related to America's maritime history, primarily focusing
on the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Perpetuate skills associated with America's maritime past.
Interpret representative elements of life in nineteenth-century
New England maritime communities.
Provide an outstanding and memorable experience for the Museum's
public.
Extend programs and services to serve a broader audience.
Manage the Museum in an exemplary manner.
Foster a productive and rewarding work environment.
Exhibits & Programs:
The village and ships area at Mystic Seaport is an active living
history museum with 17 acres of exhibits portraying coastal life
in New England in the 19th century. This section will let you explore
some of the exhibit buildings and historic vessels at the Museum
as well as the Preservation Shipyard and Exhibit Galleries.
