The maritime museum was founded in 1913 by the Nautical Society
of Gothenburg. The successful collection work resulted in such a
growth within the collection, that in a few years it was impossible
for the society to house it.
In 1917 the association Gothenburg Maritime museum was founded,
to which the collections were handed over. From the very beginning
the construction of a special museum building was the main task
of the association. Right from the commencement the shipowner Werner
Lundqvist donated 100 000 kr for this purpose and soon after, shipowner
Dan Broström and his family gave a donation of 1 000 000 Kr.
The city of Gothenburg put a building site at the museum's disposal
and 14 July 1933 the building was official inaugurated by king Gustav
V, when the building with all the collected items was handed over
to the borough of Gothenburg. The Gothenburg Maritime museum association
at the same time changed it's role, devoting itself to a supporting
role only.
