Mission Statement:

The Norwegian Maritime Museum is ideally situated at Bygdøynes on Oslo's waterfront, with rich collections related to all aspects of seafaring.

Exhibits & Programs:

Inside the main building:
The widescreen supervideograph movie "The Ocean - a Way of Life" brings to life Norway's unique coast and its maritime heritage through breathtaking pictures.

The library has maritime literature and other relevant source material for scholars and enthusiasts.

A unique collection of traditional small craft is displayed in the Boathall, supplied with exhibitions of fishers, coastal life and regional cultures.

Inside the boathall:
The polar vessel "Gjøa" stands in open air on the museum grounds; the first to make a complete transit of the legendary Northwest Passage, under the command of Roald Amundsen in 1903-06. Open to the public during summer.

The schooner "Svanen" from 1916, is moored in front of the museum when not sailing - a decorative and lively element in Bygdøynes' maritime environment. "Svanen" is available on charter for social and educational arrangements.

The Sailors War Memorial is located on the very promontory of Bygdøy, to commemorate the 4 700 Norwegian sailors who lost their lives during World War II.

The museum's open-air exhibitions include old buildings from various coastal areas of Norway, as well as a marina for traditional small craft.
