The Norwegian Maritime Museum is ideally situated at Bygdøynes
on Oslo's waterfront, with rich collections related to all aspects
of seafaring.

Inside the main building:
The widescreen supervideograph movie "The Ocean - a Way of
Life" brings to life Norway's unique coast and its maritime
heritage through breathtaking pictures.
The library has maritime literature and other relevant source material
for scholars and enthusiasts.
A unique collection of traditional small craft is displayed in
the Boathall, supplied with exhibitions of fishers, coastal life
and regional cultures.
Inside the boathall:
The polar vessel "Gjøa" stands in open air on the
museum grounds; the first to make a complete transit of the legendary
Northwest Passage, under the command of Roald Amundsen in 1903-06.
Open to the public during summer.
The schooner "Svanen" from 1916, is moored in front of
the museum when not sailing - a decorative and lively element in
Bygdøynes' maritime environment. "Svanen" is available
on charter for social and educational arrangements.
The Sailors War Memorial is located on the very promontory of Bygdøy,
to commemorate the 4 700 Norwegian sailors who lost their lives
during World War II.
The museum's open-air exhibitions include old buildings from various
coastal areas of Norway, as well as a marina for traditional small
craft.
