What
does ICMM do?
• |
Brings professional counterparts
together from all over the world for regular
conferences, creating a strong network of
maritime museum professionals.
|
• |
Organizes a week-long International
Congress every other year, at maritime sites
around the world. Lectures, workshops, discussions,
and site visits cover a variety of issues
of concern to maritime museums. Companionable
after-hours sessions and excursions add to
the strength of contacts formed at the conferences.
|
• |
Provides a focal point of contact
and professional help for museums, large and
small. ICMM offers technical assistance on
ship and boat preservation; opportunities
to exchange collections or staff; loan exhibitions;
planning, research, educational programming,
and public relations; and procurement of supplies
for maritime preservation projects.
|
• |
Publishes a regular newsletter and posts a website to support the flourishing
international network of maritime museums.
These media inform members and the public
of maritime museum events and developments
worldwide.
|
How does ICMM contribute to the maritime museum field?
• |
By developing guidelines for
the documentation and preservation of historic
ships and boats.
|
• |
By providing standards and
guidelines for underwater archaeology.
|
• |
By monitoring and nurturing
maritime museums and maritime preservation
activities on an international scale.
|
• |
By providing formal and informal
networks of communication, information and
advice for more than 300 member organizations
and individuals.
|
• |
By developing strategies to
ensure long-term public awareness and appreciation
of the significance of maritime preservation. |
How is ICMM governed?
• |
ICMM is a self-supporting members organization. Each Full Member museum has
one vote in any matter that may come before
the general assembly.
|
• |
ICMM is governed by a President,
Vice-President, Secretary General, Treasurer
and an Executive Council. These officers
serve two-year terms; they are nominated
and elected by delegates representing the
Full Member museums.
|
• |
Standing Committees address
specific issues of administration and international
affairs, such as membership, ship preservation
and archaeology. All Full Member museums are
equally eligible to be represented on committees
and to hold executive office.
|
• |
Full Member
museums appoint their own delegates, with
no specific limit to the number of representatives
that an institution may send to biennial congresses. Elections are held at the congresses . |
